Air Jordan 3 (III)

The Release of the Original Air Jordan 3

The Air Jordan 3 would mark the evolution of the air pocket. To this day, it is arguably the greatest Nike Air Jordan ever made. Designer and innovator of this revolutionary idea was Tinker Hatfield, who would go on to design every Air Jordan shoe to the Jordan 15 and has added some of his design knowledge on the Jordan 20. Other firsts for this shoe was the replacement of the Wings logo to the Jumpman logo seen on the Jordan 1 and Jordan 2, and a new elephant trim.

The Retro Jordans would leave their stamp on Jordan history

The 3rd year retro Jordans debut in 1994 and like past retro Jordans, it was unappreciated by all Air Jordan fans. The retail stores once again had a difficult time getting them off their shelves. When the re-retroed version of the Jordan 3 came out in 2001, stores could not keep them on the shelves. In 2007, they released the Fire Red Jordan 3, the Black Cats (all black), and the Pure $’s (all white).

Success goes beyond the basketball court

The Jordan 3 was also responsible for giving Nike one of its greatest ad campaigns to date. Spike Lee was Mars Blackmon in the campaign “Mars and Mike.” Here, Mars coined the phrase “Is it the Shoes?”
